A Lasting Impact: Former Students Honor Shauntel Jennings as News Channel 5 "My Hero"

When a group of former students nominated Ms. Shauntel Jennings for News Channel 5’s “My Hero” segment, they wanted to recognize someone who had made a lasting difference in their lives. Their stories of encouragement, support, and inspiration helped shine a spotlight on the impact one teacher can have far beyond the classroom.

For Ms. Jennings, the recognition carried an even deeper meaning. She knew from a young age that she wanted to become a teacher. Now a longtime educator and sports coach at Isaac Litton STEM Magnet Middle School, she is also a proud graduate of Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), having graduated from Hunters Lane High School. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University, Ms. Jennings returned to MNPS — the very district that helped shape her as a student. She began her career at Isaac Litton, and more than two decades later, it remains the only school she has taught. For over 20 years, she has dedicated her career to supporting and inspiring the next generation in the same community where she once sat in a classroom herself.

When she learned that former students had nominated her for the “My Hero” segment, the moment came as a complete surprise.

“I was shocked — honestly, just shocked, humbled and honored,” she said. “In my mind, I kept thinking, ‘Why are y’all thinking of Ms. Jennings?’ One of my former students told me he was in my very first class, and he’s 37 now. That just blew me away. With all the teachers they’ve had since then, the fact that they thought of me means everything. That’s what teaching is all about.”

Known for creating a welcoming and supportive classroom, Ms. Jennings has spent years encouraging students to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. Her approach to teaching and coaching has always gone beyond lessons and assignments, focusing on helping students envision their futures.

“Make a plan for your life and decide now who you want to be,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what your parents or siblings did — everyone has a clean slate to create their own path. I always tell my students they could be our future doctors, lawyers, or anything they dream of if they believe in themselves and stick with it.”

Former students who nominated her described a teacher who took the time to listen, offer guidance, and celebrate their successes. Those relationships continue to inspire her every day.

“I want my students to know someone truly cares about them, because when they feel supported, they’re more likely to give their best,” she said. “Whether they make a 100 or a 2, I want them to know I’m still in their corner and ready to help them figure out how to improve. When you genuinely love and support students, they recognize it, and that relationship builds respect and motivation in the classroom.”

Although the recognition was unexpected, Ms. Jennings says the experience reminded her of why she chose education in the first place.

“This recognition means so much to me because it comes from the students,” she said. “I’ve been honored as Teacher of the Year by my peers, but knowing that former students remembered me years later and took the time to nominate me is incredibly humbling. I just try to treat every child the way I would want someone to treat my own — being there for them and standing in the gap when they need it.”

The Isaac Litton family is proud to celebrate Ms. Jennings, a hometown educator whose dedication continues to make a difference in the lives of students every day.
